The Brief
Gwyneth produces watercolour portraits to commission of cottages in Cornwall. Her studies of elements of coastal life, such as fish and pebbles are very popular.
She wanted a brochure to promote her work.
Later, she commissioned me again to produce a poster for a new exhibition of her work.
The Solution
I used a cd style concertina booklet to take advantage of the square panels it would provide. I've found this to be a most effective way to display artists' work.
As always, the form of the design follows the function. The seriffed, slightly eroded quality of the headline typography and the subtle and harmonious use of colour all provide an aesthetic yet unobtrusive framing for Gwyneth's traditional watercolours.
The poster built on this solution, the text providing a dynamic balancing point for the unusual crop of her painting.
