About Lee Boyd

Born in London, I have a 2.1 BA (Hons) in Graphic Design from Falmouth College of Arts in Cornwall, England, graduating in 2002. I am also a music producer with critical accolades, licensing contracts, radio play and record releases around the world.

For me, graphic design is only good if it fulfils a brief, presenting the most effective solution to a communication problem. Notions of fashion, cleverness, egotism, and all other artistic attitudes often hinder rather than help this process.

It is estimated that a third of the net value of the top 100 companies is their branding. Well branded companies can be recognised by a couple of colours, say, or a simple iconic motif. Good branding makes growth happen – the more simple and memorable an identity is, the more easily it can be advertised and become disseminated. Creating the impact a new company needs when it ‘sets out its stall’ for the first time, and thus entice potential clients in ‘cold’ off the street, is almost entirely the responsibility of graphical branding. Conversely, one of the prime reasons that commercial enterprises fail is through poor presentation. If it doesn’t look established or professional, it won’t inspire trust and confidence in customers.

Graphic design is not art. If a designer believes that they are an artist, they should put down their laptop and pick up a brush. They chose the wrong degree course.

Less is always more, and form must always follow function. Therefore, the greatest graphic designs in the world are road traffic signs.

My key areas of are graphic consultancy, corporate identities, logos and design for print. I also provide all the copywriting required for a project.

Since graduating I have produced logos, complete corporate identities, websites with client updateable facilities and embedded multimedia, full colour books, programmes, posters, signs, cd covers, brochures, business cards, and letterheads.

Cornwall is well-known for it's large arts scene, and whilst working there I specialised as a designer working with artists, musicians, and choreographers.

Each project is delivered on time, with highly competitive rates. Before I embark on any design commission, I give the client a detailed questionnaire which allows me to be as fully prepared as possible to deliver the job in the most cost effective way that I can. This questionnaire also allows me to draw up an accurate estimate of the total cost of the commission, before I begin work.

After studying and working in Cornwall for 8 years I moved to Hamburg with my German partner Michaela in 2007.
